Volumetric weight uses the standard air freight divisor of 1 m³ to 166.67 kg (6,000 cm³ per kg). Chargeable weight is the higher of gross and volumetric. Airlines and charter operators price charter on aircraft capacity rather than chargeable weight, but the figure still tells you whether your load is weight-driven or volume-driven.

Reading the numbers before you send an RFQ
Density is the figure worth looking at first. Below roughly 160 kg per cubic metre your load is volume-driven, so hold volume and door openings decide the aircraft rather than tonnage. Above that it is weight-driven and the structural payload and sector length matter more. Server racks, insulated packaging and machinery on timber cradles usually land in the volume-driven half, which is why a 747 with 658 m³ can beat a 777F on the same tonnage.
Add the packaging before you calculate. Crating, cradles, shrink wrap and pallet bases routinely add 10 to 20 percent to both the dimensions and the weight, and a load that clears a door opening on bare equipment dimensions can fail once it is on a base. If your packing list is not final, send the numbers you have. We would rather look at an approximate load early than a perfect one late.
