    What heavy lift cargo charter is

    Heavy lift cargo charter is the dedicated hire of an outsize freighter aircraft to move cargo that exceeds the dimensional or weight envelope of standard commercial freighters. The category covers single pieces above approximately 30 tonnes, items that exceed standard main-deck pallet dimensions, and cargo that requires nose-loading or rear-ramp loading for the geometry to work.

    The aircraft used in this segment is a small population worldwide. The AN-124 fleet provides the bulk of genuine outsize capacity, with payloads up to 120 tonnes and a cargo bay capable of accepting pieces over 36 metres long and 4 metres high. The IL-76 fills the 50-tonne tier on shorter and less infrastructure-rich routes, including unpaved strips. The 747-400F and 747-8F nose-loaders accept long pieces by opening the entire forward fuselage.

    Engineering happens before the aircraft is committed

    A heavy lift charter that goes wrong on the ground costs more than the aircraft. Every Aviall heavy lift mission completes the following before commitment:

    • Load planning and lashing design against the actual aircraft type and registration
    • Centre-of-gravity and floor loading checks against the aircraft's load manual
    • Runway length, pavement classification and obstacle analysis at both ends
    • Ground handling equipment plan, cranes, K-loaders, low-loaders, forklift capacity
    • Inland movement plan from factory to airport including road permits and escorts
    • Customs and DG documentation completed before the aircraft positions
    • Backup ground equipment and contingency airports identified before departure

    Common heavy lift cargo profiles

    Mining and resources is the largest segment for outsize charter into the Asia-Pacific region, haul trucks, drill rigs, crusher and mill components, ball mill liners, and transformer assemblies for remote sites. Oil and gas regularly charters BOPs, mud pumps, process modules and drilling equipment for offshore and onshore operations. Power generation moves turbines, generator sets and transformers, often under tight commissioning deadlines.

    Aerospace is a major user of outsize capacity for engines, satellite assemblies, full fuselage sections and tooling. Defence and government move armoured vehicles, helicopters, radar and command-and-control equipment under specific clearance regimes. Infrastructure projects use outsize charter for tunnel boring machine sections, rail rolling stock, bridge components and long process plant items.

    The common thread across all of these is that the cargo is the project, not just freight. The aircraft is one part of a larger movement that includes the factory, the inland transport, the airport, the destination handling and the receiving site.

    Why the AN-124 dominates true outsize work

    The AN-124 is the workhorse of genuine outsize cargo for three reasons. First, the cargo bay geometry, 36.5 metres long, 6.4 metres wide and 4.4 metres high, accepts pieces no other in-production freighter can. Second, the rear-ramp and forward-door loading allows roll-on/roll-off as well as crane loading. Third, the on-board cranes and winches reduce the ground-equipment dependency at austere airports.

    Where the AN-124 is not the right answer, the IL-76 fills the role on shorter sectors and to runways with limited pavement classification. The 747-8F nose-loader covers long, lighter pieces moving on routes where widebody freighter capacity is more available. We default to the right aircraft, not the most expensive one.
