    How South Australian FIFO works

South Australia has a cleaner structure than most FIFO regions: Adelaide supplies the large majority of the workforce, and operations are dispersed across the far north and west of the state. That single-origin concentration makes program design simpler, but the sectors are long and the destinations are genuinely remote, so aircraft range and duty limits become live constraints rather than background detail.

The state's activity mix is broad, copper, gold, uranium and mineral sands mining, oil and gas in the north-east, and a substantial renewables and transmission build programme. Each behaves differently. Established mining operations want stable, defensible roster programs. Construction and commissioning work produces short, intense peaks with crews drawn from a wider interstate catchment.

Distance also affects whether a same-day return is realistic. Some destinations comfortably support a rotation out and back in a day; others do not once processing, turnaround and duty limits are counted. We work that out at planning stage rather than discovering it on the first rotation.

    Origins and destinations

Adelaide is the primary origin, with interstate pickups from Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney where a project workforce is drawn nationally. Destinations include Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Moomba and the Cooper Basin, plus numerous private mine and project strips.

As always, the destination determines aircraft type. Sealed regional airports open up jets and larger turboprops; project strips and exploration camps limit the field considerably. Send the destination and we will confirm what can operate.

    • Origin, Adelaide (ADL), plus interstate pickups on request
    • North, Olympic Dam, Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy, Moomba and the Cooper Basin
    • West and coastal, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Ceduna and surrounds
    • Project sites, private strips serving mining, energy and transmission builds

    Construction, commissioning and shutdown peaks

South Australia's renewables, transmission and resources projects generate defined-period demand: mobilisation, construction, commissioning and shutdown. These peaks routinely exceed what existing arrangements absorb, and they draw specialist crews from interstate rather than from Adelaide.

We price these as defined-period programs, a rotation pattern for the campaign duration with a clear basis for extension or stand-down, which is usually both cheaper and more reliable than buying capacity week by week as the schedule firms up.

    Aircraft and crew sizes

Aviall Group is not an aircraft operator. We source across a wide operator base and match aircraft to crew numbers, sector length and destination limits.

Long outback sectors favour aircraft with genuine range, and right-sizing matters here: a smaller aircraft flown more frequently often beats a half-empty larger one, particularly for exploration and specialist crews.

    • Small turboprops (up to 19 seats), exploration, specialist and short-notice crews
    • Mid-size turboprops (30–70 seats), the standard for regular rotations
    • Regional jets (70–100 seats), longer sectors and larger swings
    • Narrowbody jets (100–180 seats), construction and shutdown mobilisations

    Aviall's role

We arrange dedicated aircraft charter capacity. We are not the aircraft operator, the project contractor or the travel management company. Every flight is operated by an appropriately approved operator selected for that route and aerodrome.

Requirements reach us from mining and energy procurement, EPC and construction contractors, renewables project teams, and travel managers or TMCs coordinating on their behalf.

Confirmed before it is promised, including processing and turnaround.

    Interstate consolidation

National crew catchments routed through Adelaide or direct.

    Project surge capacity

Defined-period programs for construction and commissioning.

    Strip suitability checks

Runway, surface and operator approvals confirmed before quoting.

    Program pricing

Rotation patterns priced for budgets and tender responses.

    FIFO & workforce charter

    Have a FIFO requirement?

    Send us the requirement.

We take both recurring programs and one-off movements. Estimates are enough to start. We come back with aircraft options, capacity and baggage feasibility, and indicative pricing you can put in front of a budget holder or a tender response.

    Recurring charter program

Roster flying, workforce rotations, seasonal campaigns and scheduled corporate shuttles. Send the pattern and we price the program, not just a single flight.

    One-off group movement

A single group flight, a team, a tour, a conference, a delegation, an event crew or a shutdown surge. Five details are usually enough for a workable quote.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

For some destinations yes, for others no once processing, turnaround and crew duty limits are counted. We confirm it at planning stage rather than promising it and discovering otherwise on the first rotation.

Planning South Australian rotations or a project mobilisation?

Send origin, destination, passenger count, days of operation, departure times, commencement, duration, baggage and frequency. We return aircraft options and indicative program pricing.

    Have a live requirement?

Send us the roster pattern, ports and headcount. We return a schedule and pricing basis. Attach an existing RFQ, packing list or photos straight from your phone, partial detail is enough to start.
