Perishable freight is a shelf-life problem, not just a cargo problem

Perishable cargo charter exists because the value of seafood, fresh produce and live-related shipments erodes continuously from the moment of harvest or catch, and scheduled freight capacity rarely lines up with the exact window when the product is at peak quality and ready to move. Charter allows the flight to be scheduled around the product's readiness, rather than the product being held or accelerated to fit an existing flight slot.

    Categories of perishable charter freight

Different perishable categories carry different handling windows and constraints.

    • Live seafood (crustaceans, molluscs), requires stable temperature, adequate oxygen or moisture retention, and minimal handling time; viability windows are measured in hours
    • Fresh seafood (chilled, non-live), requires consistent cool-chain temperature and rapid transit to preserve quality grading
    • Fresh produce, sensitive to temperature, humidity and, for some varieties, ethylene exposure from other cargo
    • Cut flowers and horticultural exports, highly sensitive to temperature and handling time, often timed to a specific market delivery date

Scheduling around harvest and market windows

Perishable charter scheduling starts from two fixed points: when the product will actually be ready (harvest, catch or pack date) and when it needs to reach the destination market to command full value (market open, auction time, or retailer delivery window). The charter is planned to depart as close as possible to the readiness point while still landing inside the market window, minimising the time the product spends in transit regardless of typical transit times for the route.

    Handling requirements specific to perishables

Perishable freight has handling needs that differ meaningfully from general cargo.

    • Minimal ground dwell time at both ends, perishable freight is prioritised for fastest possible transfer through ground handling
    • Segregation from cargo that could taint, contaminate or accelerate ripening through ethylene exposure
    • Live product monitoring during transit where oxygen, moisture or temperature needs active management
    • Pre-cooled aircraft hold and ground vehicles ahead of the shipment's arrival to avoid a temperature step-change
    • Rapid customs and biosecurity clearance coordination at the destination, arranged in advance of arrival

    Seasonal charter patterns

Many perishable exports run on a seasonal pattern rather than a single shipment, a harvest season or a fishing season generating a series of charters across several weeks or months. Aviall works with exporters to set a rotation pattern for the season, which reduces the lead time needed for each individual charter once the pattern is established and gives cost certainty across the season's volume.

Australia to Asia-Pacific perishable export lanes

Australian seafood and premium produce exports commonly move via charter into South-East Asian and North Asian markets, including Singapore, Hong Kong and destinations across China, where market timing around key trading days can significantly affect achievable price. Charter scheduling accounts for these market-specific timing factors rather than treating every destination on a uniform transit assumption.

    Ethylene and contamination segregation

Cargo hold planning to avoid cross-exposure between incompatible goods.

    Rapid ground transfer

Minimal dwell time prioritised at both origin and destination.

    Seasonal rotation planning

Recurring charter patterns set for harvest and fishing seasons.

    Biosecurity and customs coordination

    Humanitarian · Surge

Multi-rotation airlift after a regional disaster

Following a sudden-onset disaster in the wider region, an aid consortium needed shelter, water and medical kit moved on consecutive days into a damaged airfield with reduced services. Aviall built a rotation plan around aircraft suited to the strip and pre-positioned ground handling support.

    Outcome

Sustained airlift maintained across consecutive days without diversion.

    Perishables

    Seasonal export window into Asia

A premium agri-export business required a single-shipper rotation during a tight harvest window when scheduled belly capacity was full. Aviall chartered a freighter sized to the volume and held a slot pattern at the destination customs gateway across the season.

    Outcome

Full season's volume cleared without missed shelf dates at the destination market.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

Charters are scheduled to depart as close as possible to the confirmed harvest or catch readiness point, which is one of the main advantages over booking a fixed scheduled freight slot in advance.

Why operators, brokers and end clients keep calling back

Credibility built on operational discipline, not marketing

"Quote came back inside the hour with two aircraft options, written wheels-up windows and the cost-versus-time trade-off laid out. That is what we expect and rarely get."

, Project logistics manager · Resources sector

"Documentation, NOTOCs and DG paperwork were closed before we'd finished briefing our customer. No back-and-forth, no surprises at the ramp."

    , Senior freight forwarder · Global 3PL

"They run the mission like an operator, not like a broker. That distinction matters when the cargo is heavy, the route is hard and the clock is real."

, Charter broker · International network
