    How cargo charter pricing works

Cargo charter pricing is built bottom-up against the actual mission. There is no published rate card for freighter charter because there is no standard mission, the price is set by the aircraft type, total flight hours including positioning, fuel, crew duty, ground handling at both ends, navigation and overflight permits, parking, and any specialist requirements such as DG handling, oversize ground equipment or specialist loadmasters.

Operators that quote a flat per-tonne or per-mile rate without knowing the cargo profile and the route are either over-pricing to cover risk or under-pricing on assumptions that will be revised after commitment. Aviall returns a written, itemised quote with the cost drivers visible so the customer sees exactly what they are paying for and why.

The eight cost drivers in plain language

Eight factors drive virtually every cargo charter quote:

    • Aircraft type, regional 737F, mid widebody (A330F, 767F), heavy widebody (777F, 747F), or outsize (IL-76, AN-124). Larger aircraft cost more per hour but cover the route in fewer hours and carry more payload
    • Total flight hours including positioning legs, the empty flights to bring the aircraft to the origin and return it after delivery. Often the largest single variable
    • Fuel, the largest operational cost line, sensitive to route, tankerage strategy and uplift cost at each station
    • Crew duty time, including any required overnight if the mission stretches beyond a single duty period
    • Ground handling at both ends, including any specialist equipment for outsize or heavy single pieces
    • Navigation and overflight permits in every jurisdiction on the route, these vary substantially by country
    • Cargo profile, DG class, perishable, pharma cool-chain, valuables, oversize handling all add cost
    • Urgency, same-day and short-notice activations cost more because they exclude the cheaper aircraft and crew options

Indicative cost ranges by aircraft tier (orientation only)

These ranges are for orientation only and are not a quote. Actual pricing is mission-specific and individual missions can sit outside these ranges for entirely defensible reasons. They are based on Aviall's regular activity across the Asia-Pacific and intercontinental cargo charter market.

Regional freighter (737F or similar, ~20-25 t payload), short-haul under 3 hours, no significant positioning: typically USD $25,000-$80,000.

    Mid widebody freighter (A330F, 767F, ~40-60 t payload), regional or medium-haul: typically USD $80,000-$220,000.

    Heavy widebody freighter (777F, 747-400F, 747-8F, ~90-110 t payload), intercontinental: typically USD $220,000-$700,000.

Outsize IL-76 (~50 t payload, austere-strip capable): typically USD $200,000-$500,000 depending on route and infrastructure.

Outsize AN-124 (~120 t payload, true project cargo): typically USD $500,000-$1.5M+ for long-range missions with positioning.

Specialist additions, DG (Class 1/Class 9), pharma cool-chain, valuables escort, specialist loadmasters or oversize ground equipment, add a defined increment over the baseline mission and are quoted transparently.

The two variables that move the number most

Positioning is the single largest cost lever the customer rarely sees. If the aircraft is already in the right region on the day, the positioning legs are short and the bill is materially lower. If the aircraft has to be flown empty from another continent before it can fly your cargo, the positioning legs can equal or exceed the operational legs in cost. Lead time is what allows the desk to find the aircraft that is closest to the origin, which is why a charter booked four weeks ahead is almost always materially cheaper than the same charter booked four days ahead.

Aircraft tier is the second lever. A 60-tonne shipment may fit in a 777F at one price or an AN-124 at another. The smaller aircraft is usually cheaper but only if the cargo geometry actually fits, under-sizing the aircraft creates a second mission. Over-sizing costs money without moving the cargo any faster. The right aircraft is the one that fits the cargo and the route at the lowest defensible cost.

What an honest cargo charter quote includes

A quote that can be relied upon, and that will not be revised after commitment, sets out, in writing:

    • Aircraft type, registration availability and operator
    • Routing including any tech stops with the reason for them
    • Realistic wheels-up window from confirmed booking
    • Permit status on each leg with confidence level
    • Ground handling at origin and destination, including specialist equipment if required
    • Cargo acceptance constraints, DG class, dimensions, weight, special handling
    • All-in price with positioning, fuel, handling, permits, crew duty itemised
    • Cancellation and amendment terms

How fast can you get a cargo charter quote?

Most cargo charter quotes are returned in under 60 minutes from enquiry, written and itemised, with two or three aircraft options where the route allows. Outsize and heavy lift quotes (AN-124, 747-8F nose-loader, IL-76 to austere strips) typically take longer because the engineering work, load planning, runway and pavement analysis, ground equipment plan, is completed before the price is committed.

Aviall's pricing desk runs 24/7. The number on the page is the number on the invoice, barring a customer-driven scope change such as additional cargo, a re-routed destination, or a postponed departure that pushes the mission outside the original aircraft availability window.

How Aviall quotes cargo charter, transparent, written, itemised

    Bottom-up pricing

Built against the actual aircraft, route and cargo, never a flat per-tonne rate dropped on the customer.

    Written breakdown

Every quote itemised so cost drivers are visible. Customers see what they are paying for and why.

    Two-to-three aircraft options

Most quotes return more than one option so the cost-versus-time trade-off is the customer's, not ours.

    All-in numbers

Positioning, fuel, handling, permits, crew duty priced in at quote stage. No revision after commitment.

    Sub-60-minute turnaround

Most cargo quotes returned within the hour, 24/7. Outsize and engineered missions take longer because the engineering is real.

DG and specialist add-ons priced clearly

Class 9 lithium, pharma cool-chain, valuables and specialist handling all itemised against the baseline.

    Heavy lift · Project cargo

Outsize mining component into a remote regional strip

An ASX-listed resources operator faced a stalled processing line waiting on a single oversized component too large for any scheduled freighter. Aviall sourced an outsize main-deck nose-loader, completed pavement and load-spread checks at the regional destination, and coordinated road movement permits at both ends.

    Outcome

Component on site inside 72 hours of first call; production line restart same week.

    AOG · Time critical

Replacement engine to a wide-body grounded overseas

A major carrier had a wide-body grounded at a foreign hub, awaiting a replacement engine sitting in a domestic MRO. Aviall positioned a freighter to the MRO, coordinated dangerous goods documentation for the engine and stand, and held a flight-following bridge with the airline's tech ops cell door-to-door.

    Outcome

Engine wheels-up inside 14 hours of release; aircraft returned to service the next operational day.

    Pharma · Cool chain

    Temperature-controlled biologics on a single-shipper aircraft

A global health programme required a high-value biologics consignment moved on a controlled cool-chain into the Asia-Pacific without consolidation risk. Aviall chartered a freighter dedicated to the shipment, with active containers, written ramp-time targets, and continuous data-logger oversight.

    Outcome

Zero temperature excursions; chain-of-custody documentation closed within 24 hours of landing.

    Dangerous goods

Class 1 movement refused by scheduled carriers

A government end user needed a Class 1 consignment moved on a tight window after scheduled carriers declined the booking. Aviall identified an operator approved for the class, completed the DG paperwork, NOTOC and security plan, and ran a single-shipper rotation under a controlled handling regime.

    Outcome

Movement completed inside the customer's window with full regulatory close-out.

    Humanitarian · Surge

Multi-rotation airlift after a regional disaster

Following a sudden-onset disaster in the wider region, an aid consortium needed shelter, water and medical kit moved on consecutive days into a damaged airfield with reduced services. Aviall built a rotation plan around aircraft suited to the strip and pre-positioned ground handling support.

    Outcome

Sustained airlift maintained across consecutive days without diversion.

    Perishables

    Seasonal export window into Asia

A premium agri-export business required a single-shipper rotation during a tight harvest window when scheduled belly capacity was full. Aviall chartered a freighter sized to the volume and held a slot pattern at the destination customs gateway across the season.

    Outcome

Full season's volume cleared without missed shelf dates at the destination market.

Why operators, brokers and end clients keep calling back

Credibility built on operational discipline, not marketing

"Quote came back inside the hour with two aircraft options, written wheels-up windows and the cost-versus-time trade-off laid out. That is what we expect and rarely get."
