    Why data centre equipment needs a different freight approach

    Data centre builds and upgrades combine two pressures that don't usually appear together in the same shipment: the equipment is often physically heavy and awkward, transformers, switchgear, cooling plant, server racks, while also being electronically sensitive to shock, vibration and, in some cases, moisture and static. A freight approach built purely around weight and dimensions misses the handling requirements; one built purely around fragility misses the structural loading requirements. Both have to be planned together.

    Equipment categories and their handling needs

    Different classes of data centre equipment carry different constraints during air transport.

    • Server racks and populated cabinets, vibration-sensitive, typically shipped upright or on shock-isolating mounts, with drive and memory components sometimes removed and hand-carried separately
    • GPU and compute nodes, high value density, sensitive to static and shock, often requiring individual crating and continuous custody tracking
    • Transformers and switchgear, heavy, often requiring load-spreading on the aircraft floor and specific orientation limits during transit
    • Cooling and mechanical plant, bulky, generally more tolerant of handling but sensitive to orientation and moisture ingress during transfer
    • Cabling, racking and structural components, lower sensitivity but often high volume, useful for filling remaining aircraft capacity efficiently

    Shock, vibration and orientation planning

    Before a data centre shipment is loaded, the equipment's handling instructions, from the manufacturer or the site's engineering team, are checked against the aircraft's expected vibration profile and the ground handling equipment available at both ends. Where equipment has an orientation requirement (this side up, no tilt beyond a stated angle), that constraint is built into the loading plan and communicated to ground handling crews at every stop, not assumed to be obvious from the crate markings alone.

    Crating and packaging for air transport

    Purpose-built crating is standard for high-value data centre equipment moving by air charter, using shock-isolating mounts and moisture barriers appropriate to the equipment class and the climate at origin and destination. Aviall coordinates with the client's packaging provider or nominated freight forwarder ahead of collection to confirm crate dimensions fit the intended aircraft's door and floor limits before the aircraft is booked, avoiding a last-minute mismatch between crate size and aircraft access.

    Scheduling against a commissioning date

    Data centre and AI infrastructure builds typically run against a fixed commissioning or go-live date set well in advance, with limited tolerance for slippage once site works are underway. Charter scheduling for this equipment works backward from that date, sequencing deliveries so equipment arrives in installation order and building in contingency for the heaviest or most complex items, which usually carry the longest lead time for aircraft and ground equipment sourcing.
