    Bowen Basin FIFO Charter Flights

Queensland's coal heartland, where crews come from several coastal cities rather than one capital, and where multi-origin planning is the whole game.

What makes Bowen Basin FIFO different from WA

The defining difference is where the workforce lives. Western Australian FIFO is overwhelmingly Perth-centred; Queensland's coal workforce is spread across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns, with a significant residential population in the mining towns themselves. A single-origin program rarely fits.

That makes multi-origin planning central rather than optional. The practical question is whether to run separate smaller aircraft from several coastal cities, consolidate crews into one origin by road or scheduled service, or fly a multi-stop rotation. Each has a different cost and a different effect on how much of a swing is spent travelling.

The region also has more usable aviation infrastructure than its remoteness suggests. Moranbah, Emerald, Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount and mine-operated aerodromes support regular rotational flying, which widens aircraft options and often allows a direct arrival close to site.

    Origins, destinations and consolidation

Brisbane is the largest single origin, but Mackay is frequently the most efficient for northern Bowen Basin operations, and Townsville and Cairns matter where a workforce is drawn from the north. Rockhampton and the Sunshine Coast serve specific residential catchments.

Consolidation is worth modelling properly. Two 50-seat rotations from separate origins may cost more than one 100-seat rotation plus a road transfer, or considerably less, once shift time lost to travel is counted. Send the residential split with your requirement and we will compare the options rather than assume one.

    • Origins, Brisbane (BNE), Mackay (MKY), Townsville (TSV), Cairns (CNS), Rockhampton (ROK), Sunshine Coast (MCY)
    • Destinations, Moranbah, Emerald, Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount and mine aerodromes
    • Typical sectors, short, so processing and turnaround discipline dominate
    • Multi-stop rotations, used where they beat operating two separate aircraft

Shutdowns, longwall moves and project peaks

Coal operations generate sharp, predictable demand peaks: planned shutdowns, longwall relocations, major maintenance campaigns and project construction phases. Each pulls large numbers of contractors into the region for defined periods, and those contractors are frequently drawn from a wider catchment than the permanent workforce.

This is where dedicated charter is usually most valuable, because the requirement exceeds normal capacity for a few weeks and then disappears. We price these as defined-period programs, a rotation pattern for the campaign duration, with a clear basis for extension if the scope moves.

    Aircraft and crew sizes

Aviall Group is not an aircraft operator. We source across a wide operator base and match aircraft to the roster, the origin split and the destination aerodrome.

Because Queensland rotations are frequently split across origins, mid-size aircraft do a lot of the work here. Larger consolidated rotations and shutdown surges bring narrowbody jets into play where the destination airport supports them.

    • Turboprops (30–70 seats), the standard for split-origin rotations
    • Regional jets (70–100 seats), consolidated swings into sealed airports
    • Narrowbody jets (100–180 seats), shutdown surges and large mobilisations
    • Small turboprops, specialist crews and short-notice movements

    Aviall's role

We arrange dedicated aircraft charter capacity. We are not the aircraft operator, the mining contractor or the travel management company. Every flight is operated by an appropriately approved operator selected for the route and aerodrome.

Enquiries here come from mining procurement, maintenance and shutdown planners, contractors mobilising campaign crews, and travel managers or TMCs coordinating on their behalf. We work to whichever of those interfaces you already run.

    FIFO & workforce charter

    Have a FIFO requirement?

    Send us the requirement.

We take both recurring programs and one-off movements. Estimates are enough to start. We come back with aircraft options, capacity and baggage feasibility, and indicative pricing you can put in front of a budget holder or a tender response.

    Recurring charter program

Roster flying, workforce rotations, seasonal campaigns and scheduled corporate shuttles. Send the pattern and we price the program, not just a single flight.

    One-off group movement

A single group flight, a team, a tour, a conference, a delegation, an event crew or a shutdown surge. Five details are usually enough for a workable quote.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes, via a multi-stop rotation, and sometimes it is cheaper to run separate aircraft or consolidate crews by road. It depends on the residential split and the value of shift time lost to travel. Send the split and we will model both.

Planning Bowen Basin rotations or a shutdown campaign?

Send origins, destination, passenger count, days of operation, departure times, commencement, duration, baggage and frequency. We return aircraft options and indicative program pricing.

    Have a live requirement?
