    Surat Basin FIFO Charter Flights

Gas country, where the workforce is dispersed across a field rather than concentrated at a single pit, and the aviation plan has to reflect that.

Gas fields behave differently from mines

A coal mine concentrates people at one location. A coal seam gas field spreads them across hundreds of kilometres of wells, gathering lines, compression stations and processing facilities. The workforce is therefore distributed, road travel within the field is a significant part of the working day, and the aviation question becomes which gateway minimises total ground time rather than which strip is closest to a single pit.

That distribution also means the workforce mix leans heavily toward contractors and specialists, drilling crews, well services, compression and processing technicians, construction and commissioning teams. Those crews mobilise and demobilise more often than a permanent mine workforce, which produces more frequent, more variable movements.

Proximity to the coast is the third factor. The Surat Basin is closer to Brisbane and Toowoomba than the Bowen Basin, which makes road transport a genuine competitor to flying for some crews and changes where charter earns its place: usually on longer catchments, tight mobilisation windows and turnaround peaks.

Origins, gateways and the ground leg

Brisbane is the main crew source, and Toowoomba Wellcamp is an increasingly practical gateway with good regional access. Roma serves the western field, with Chinchilla, Miles, Dalby and Injune part of the broader operating footprint.

Because ground travel inside the field is substantial, gateway selection should be made against total door-to-site time rather than flight time alone. A gateway 30 minutes further by air can easily save two hours by road. Tell us where crews actually need to be and we will work the comparison.

    • Origins, Brisbane (BNE), Sunshine Coast (MCY), interstate where crews are drawn wider
    • Gateways, Toowoomba Wellcamp (WTB), Roma (RMA), Chinchilla and regional strips
    • Field footprint, Chinchilla, Miles, Dalby, Injune, Wandoan and surrounds
    • Ground leg, usually the dominant variable, so gateway choice matters most

    Mobilisation, turnarounds and campaign work

Gas operations generate defined-period peaks: plant turnarounds, drilling campaigns, compression upgrades, pipeline construction and commissioning phases. Each requires a temporary uplift in crew numbers, often drawn from a wider catchment than the permanent workforce, and each disappears again when the campaign closes.

We price those as defined-period programs, a rotation pattern for the campaign duration with a clear basis for extension or stand-down. That approach usually beats repeatedly buying ad-hoc capacity as each week's requirement firms up, both on cost and on availability.

    Aircraft and crew sizes

Aviall Group is not an aircraft operator. We source across a wide operator base and match aircraft to crew numbers, gateway and timing rather than to one fleet.

Surat Basin rotations are commonly smaller and more frequent than Bowen Basin swings, which favours turboprops and smaller jets. Larger construction or turnaround mobilisations bring narrowbody jets into play through Wellcamp or Brisbane.

    • Small turboprops (up to 19 seats), specialist crews and short-notice movements
    • Mid-size turboprops (30–70 seats), the standard for regular field rotations
    • Regional jets (70–100 seats), larger campaign mobilisations
    • Narrowbody jets (100–180 seats), major turnaround and construction peaks

    Aviall's role

We arrange dedicated aircraft charter capacity. We are not the aircraft operator, the energy contractor or the travel management company. Every movement is flown by an appropriately approved operator selected for the route and aerodrome.

Enquiries typically come from energy procurement, turnaround and campaign planners, well services and construction contractors, and travel managers or TMCs coordinating on their behalf.

    FIFO & workforce charter

    Have a FIFO requirement?

    Send us the requirement.

We take both recurring programs and one-off movements. Estimates are enough to start. We come back with aircraft options, capacity and baggage feasibility, and indicative pricing you can put in front of a budget holder or a tender response.

    Recurring charter program

Roster flying, workforce rotations, seasonal campaigns and scheduled corporate shuttles. Send the pattern and we price the program, not just a single flight.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes not, and we will say so. Charter earns its place where the crew catchment is wider than south-east Queensland, where a mobilisation window is tight, or during turnarounds when numbers spike. For routine short-catchment travel, road may genuinely be the better answer.
