Two different aircraft for two different problems
The AN-124 and IL-76 are often grouped together as 'Russian-design heavy lifters', but in practice they solve different parts of the outsize cargo problem. Choosing between them is not about which aircraft is bigger. It is about matching payload, cargo geometry, range and destination infrastructure to the actual mission. Selecting the wrong type adds cost, delay or, in the worst case, a load that physically cannot be flown.
Aviall Group's heavy lift desk works directly with the operators of both types on every mission, so the comparison below reflects how the aircraft are chosen operationally rather than from a brochure.
