    Two different aircraft for two different problems

    The AN-124 and IL-76 are often grouped together as 'Russian-design heavy lifters', but in practice they solve different parts of the outsize cargo problem. Choosing between them is not about which aircraft is bigger. It is about matching payload, cargo geometry, range and destination infrastructure to the actual mission. Selecting the wrong type adds cost, delay or, in the worst case, a load that physically cannot be flown.

    Payload and cargo hold capacity

    The AN-124 is the larger of the two by a wide margin. It carries payloads up to approximately 120 tonnes and accepts single pieces over 36 metres long, with a cargo hold roughly 6.4 metres wide and over 4 metres high. It is the default choice for genuine outsize work, transformers, mining equipment, fuselage sections, satellites and long process modules.

    The IL-76 occupies the 40–50 tonne tier. Its cargo hold is narrower and lower (around 3.4 metres wide and 3.4 metres high), which suits dense, palletised or moderately oversized cargo rather than true outsize pieces. Where the AN-124 is over-capacity for a 30-tonne load into a less-developed airfield, the IL-76 is frequently the more economical and operationally practical answer.

    Range, runway and airfield access

    Range scales with payload on both types. The AN-124 can cover long intercontinental sectors but typically needs developed runways with adequate length and pavement strength, which limits the airfields it can use without analysis. The IL-76 trades ultimate range and capacity for ruggedness. It is designed to operate from shorter and less-prepared strips, including unpaved surfaces, which makes it valuable for humanitarian, remote-resource and developing-region missions across the Asia-Pacific.

    For any outsize charter, the deciding factor is rarely the aircraft alone. Runway length, pavement classification, obstacle clearance and ground handling equipment at both ends determine which type can actually complete the mission.

    How the right aircraft is selected

The aircraft selection falls out of that engineering rather than driving it.

    If your cargo is genuinely outsize, long, tall or above ~50 tonnes, the AN-124 is almost always the answer. If it is dense or moderately sized and the destination is less developed, the IL-76 frequently wins on cost and access.
