Port Moresby operating conditions that shape the plan
PNG planning is terrain and daylight driven. Aircraft are selected for strip capability first and cabin comfort second, and departure timing is set to land well inside usable light.
For patient transfers, retrieval from a provincial strip is normally a two-stage movement, strip-capable turboprop to Port Moresby, then a jet sector to an Australian or regional receiving facility, with clearances arranged while the first leg is airborne.
- Jacksons International (POM/AYPY) is Papua New Guinea's main gateway and the practical hub for onward domestic sectors
- Many PNG provincial strips are short, unsealed, unlit and surrounded by high terrain, so daylight operation is often mandatory
- Rapidly forming cloud and afternoon build-ups over the highlands routinely close strips at short notice
- Cairns and Brisbane are the usual Australian staging and clearance points for inbound and outbound movements
