The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F — the freighter development of the DC-10 lineage — is a long-serving tri-jet built for high-volume palletised air cargo. It is chosen for dense, containerised and palletised freight moving over long range: e-commerce surges, general and industrial cargo, and scheduled-capacity backfill.
Its main deck takes a large number of standard pallets, making it efficient for high-cube, moderate-weight freight rather than single outsize pieces.
The MD-11F carries payloads up to roughly 90 tonnes and accepts around 26 main-deck pallet positions plus lower-hold capacity. It is optimised for volume and pallet count rather than outsize geometry.
With long-haul range, it suits intercontinental palletised cargo lanes where a wide-body freighter's capacity is needed but the AN-124's outsize capability is not.
The MD-11F is the right call for high-volume palletised freight over long range. For genuine outsize or super-heavy single pieces, a nose-loading freighter such as the AN-124 is required instead; for smaller volumes, a narrow-body freighter is more economical.
