What the 747-8F is built for

The Boeing 747-8F is the modern flagship of the freighter world: high payload, large main-deck volume and the iconic hinged nose door that allows straight-in loading of long cargo that cannot turn the corner through a side door. For general freight, automotive, aerospace, project cargo and time-critical airlift, it is one of the most capable and widely available freighters in service.

Where the AN-124 wins on genuine outsize and extreme tonnage, the 747-8F wins on volume, frequency and global availability. It is the default for long, heavy but loadable cargo across intercontinental routes.

    Payload, main deck and loading

The 747-8F carries a maximum structural payload of around 135 tonnes across a main deck and lower hold. The nose door allows pieces up to the full length of the main deck to be loaded straight in, while the side cargo door handles standard pallets and containers.

Its main deck is built around standard aviation pallets and containers, which makes it fast to load and turn around, a major advantage on multi-leg or repeat charter programmes.

    • Max payload, approximately 135 tonnes
    • Loading, hinged nose door for long cargo, plus a side cargo door
    • Main deck, sized for standard aviation pallets and containers
    • Best for, long, heavy and high-volume general and project cargo

    Range and route flexibility

With a range of roughly 7,300 nautical miles at typical payloads, the 747-8F covers most intercontinental sectors non-stop, with heavier loads handled by a technical stop. Its global operating base means an aircraft can usually be positioned quickly for charter, which matters for time-critical and AOG-driven freight.

For Asia-Pacific charters, that combination of reach and availability makes the 747-8F a frequent answer for trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe cargo that is large but does not require a dedicated outsize lifter.

When the 747-8F is the right aircraft

Choose the 747-8F for long, heavy or high-volume cargo that still fits a main-deck freighter, automotive, aerospace assemblies, machinery, humanitarian airlift and time-critical general freight. For genuine outsize pieces choose the AN-124; for dense moderate loads into rougher fields, the IL-76 may be more economical.

Send us the cargo manifest and route and we will confirm the right freighter and quote it engineered against the airframe.

Boeing 747-8F payload, volume, range and loading

The figures below are published structural and design maxima. They are not a guaranteed charter payload. What a specific airframe can actually lift on your sector depends on routing and sector length, fuel uplift, temperature and weather, runway length and pavement strength, altitude, cargo geometry and density, the operator's configuration and the individual aircraft's condition and weight variant. Achievable payload is confirmed against a nominated airframe and route before a charter is committed.

    Payload, volume and range

    Maximum payload
Approximately 133,000 kg (293,000 lb) structural maximum payload.
    Cargo volume
Approximately 789 m³ total, around 694 m³ on the main deck, 81 m³ in the forward lower hold and 15 m³ bulk.
    Range at high payload
Around 4,340 nm (8,040 km) at maximum payload.
    Main deck
Full-length main deck with roughly 3.0 m usable height at the pallet position, side-by-side 96 x 125 in pallet loading and a powered cargo handling system throughout.
    Airfield considerations
Major international freight gateways with long runways, adequate pavement strength and main-deck loading equipment.

    Cargo doors and loading

    Main-deck side door
    3.4 m wide x 3.1 m high clear opening
    Forward / aft lower-hold doors
    2.8 m wide x 1.7 m high
    Nose loading
Yes, an upward-hinging nose door allows straight-in loading of long single pieces. Exact nose-door clear opening varies by airframe and must be confirmed against the specific aircraft offered.

    Pallet and ULD capability

    • Main deck: around 30 pallet positions at 96 x 125 in base
    • 88 x 125 in bases also accepted
    • Lower holds: LD-1 / LD-3 class containers plus bulk

    Cargo this type suits

    • High-volume general and express freight
    • Long single pieces suited to nose loading
    • Aerospace and industrial spares
    • Data-centre and technology equipment at scale

    Operational strengths

    • Highest usable payload and volume combination in the commercial freighter fleet
    • Nose loading for long, awkward single pieces
    • Global operator base, so availability is usually findable at short notice

    Limitations to plan around

    • Needs a long runway and a widebody freighter-capable apron with main-deck loaders
    • Uneconomic for small consignments, a smaller freighter is usually cheaper per shipment
    • Not suitable for airfields without high-loader equipment

    Typical charter applications

    • Full-charter intercontinental cargo movements
    • Project cargo and infrastructure programmes
    • Peak-season express and technology capacity
