Antonov AN-124: The Outsize Cargo Workhorse

When a load is genuinely outsize, long, tall or above 50 tonnes, the AN-124 is almost always the answer. Here is what it carries and the missions it is chosen for.

What the AN-124 is built for

The Antonov AN-124 is the default choice for true outsize air cargo, the loads that simply will not fit, or cannot be safely floor-loaded, on a converted passenger freighter. Transformers, mining and resource equipment, fuselage and wing sections, satellites, locomotives, generators and long process modules are its everyday work.

Its value is not just raw tonnage. The combination of a very large, near-rectangular cargo hold, full-width nose and rear doors, onboard cranes and an adjustable undercarriage that kneels for ramp loading means it can self-handle cargo at airfields with limited ground equipment, a decisive advantage on remote or project sites across the Asia-Pacific.

    Payload, cargo hold and loading

The AN-124 carries payloads up to approximately 120 tonnes, with a cargo hold roughly 36 metres long, 6.4 metres wide and over 4 metres high. It accepts single pieces longer than most aircraft can physically load, and its floor is engineered for concentrated point loads.

Full-width nose and rear cargo doors allow straight-through, drive-on loading, and the onboard overhead cranes and winches let the aircraft load and unload itself where no ground crane exists.

    • Max payload, up to ~120 tonnes
    • Cargo deck, ~36 m long, ~6.4 m wide, ~4.4 m high
    • Loading, full-width nose and rear doors, onboard cranes, kneeling undercarriage
    • Best for, outsize, heavy and concentrated point-load cargo

    Range, runway and airfield access

Range scales with payload: the AN-124 can cover long intercontinental sectors, but heavier loads trade range for tonnage and may require a technical stop. Because of its size and weight, it typically needs developed runways with adequate length and pavement strength, so airfield analysis is part of every mission.

For any AN-124 charter, the deciding factor is rarely the aircraft alone, runway length, pavement classification, obstacle clearance and ground handling at both ends determine whether the type can actually complete the lift.

When the AN-124 is the right aircraft

If your cargo is genuinely outsize, too long, too tall or above roughly 50 tonnes, the AN-124 is almost always the answer. For dense, palletised or moderately oversized loads, or for less-developed airfields, a smaller freighter such as the IL-76 is frequently more economical and practical.

Send Aviall the dimensions and weights of your cargo and the origin and destination, and we will confirm whether the AN-124 fits, engineer the load and quote it against the actual airframe.

Antonov AN-124 payload, volume, range and loading

The figures below are published structural and design maxima. They are not a guaranteed charter payload. What a specific airframe can actually lift on your sector depends on routing and sector length, fuel uplift, temperature and weather, runway length and pavement strength, altitude, cargo geometry and density, the operator's configuration and the individual aircraft's condition and weight variant. Achievable payload is confirmed against a nominated airframe and route before a charter is committed.

    Payload, volume and range

    Maximum payload
120,000 kg on the An-124-100; up to 150,000 kg on the An-124-150 variant.
    Cargo volume
Approximately 1,040 m³ of cargo cabin volume.
    Range at high payload
Around 4,500 km at maximum payload.
    Main deck
Unobstructed cargo cabin approximately 36.5 m long, 6.4 m wide and 4.4 m high (43.7 m including the ramp), with drive-on capability and onboard cranes rated to around 30 tonnes.
    Airfield considerations
Long runways with high pavement strength. Airfield suitability is assessed for every mission before commitment.

    Cargo doors and loading

    Cargo opening (nose and tail)
    6.4 m wide x 4.4 m high
    Nose loading
Yes, upward-hinging nose visor plus a rear ramp, giving straight-through loading and roll-on / roll-off access for wheeled and tracked equipment.

    Pallet and ULD capability

    • Primarily loose and palletised project cargo rather than standard ULDs
    • Onboard cranes and ramps allow loading without airport high-loaders

    Cargo this type suits

    • Outsize and over-height single pieces
    • Generators, transformers, turbines and mining equipment
    • Helicopters, vehicles and defence equipment
    • Emergency and humanitarian response loads

    Operational strengths

    • Handles pieces no commercial freighter can accept
    • Self-sufficient loading at airports without cargo equipment
    • Nose and tail access for very long items

    Limitations to plan around

    • Very limited global fleet, availability and lead time are the binding constraints
    • High charter cost; only justified by outsize or ultra-heavy cargo
    • Requires long, strong runways and careful pavement assessment

    Typical charter applications

    • Project and infrastructure cargo
    • Energy and mining plant relocation
    • Defence and government logistics
    • Disaster response

    Aircraft options

    Need this aircraft class?

Send origin, destination, payload, dimensions or CBM and your ready date. Attach a packing list or existing RFQ if you have one, partial detail is enough for us to come back with aircraft options and an indicative structure for the Antonov AN-124 class and the realistic alternatives.
