What dedicated cargo aircraft gives you

A dedicated aircraft is capacity you control. The cargo travels alone, in a loading sequence you agree, on a departure time set around your readiness rather than a published schedule, with no transhipment, no consolidation with unknown freight and no risk of being offloaded to make room for someone else's shipment.

For technology and infrastructure freight, that control is usually the point. Scheduled airfreight is cheaper per kilogram and will remain the right answer for most cargo. Charter is bought when the shipment is too large, too tall, too sensitive, too valuable or too tightly scheduled for capacity that is shared and subject to change.

Full charter, part charter and programme capacity

Full charter means the whole aircraft is yours. It is the simplest model, gives total control of loading and timing, and is the usual answer for a complete deployment tranche or an outsize single piece.

Part charter, sometimes called block space or a co-load on a chartered aircraft, gives a defined portion of a dedicated freighter's capacity. It is a good option when your cargo does not fill an aircraft but still needs to move on a controlled, non-scheduled service, and it is often the difference between a charter being affordable and being dismissed.

Programme capacity plans a series of rotations across a build phase rather than pricing each flight under pressure. Where a project has a known equipment pipeline, this typically produces better rates and better aircraft availability than repeatedly buying spot capacity when a milestone is already at risk.

    • Full charter, complete aircraft, complete control, best for full tranches and outsize pieces
    • Part charter, a defined share of a dedicated freighter, controlled but cost-shared
    • Programme rotations, pre-planned capacity aligned to milestones and manufacturing releases
    • Ad-hoc urgent, single movement for a critical replacement or a schedule recovery

    Where 747F capability fits

The 747-8F and 747-400F are the highest-volume commercial freighters in service, and their distinguishing feature for infrastructure cargo is the nose door. Nose loading allows very long single pieces to be loaded straight down the main deck centreline, which a side-door-only aircraft cannot accept regardless of how much payload it has spare.

For data centre and technology cargo, the 747F is generally considered when total volume is large, a full deployment tranche of racks or cooling plant, or when one piece is too long or too tall for other types. It is not automatically the right answer: a 777F or A330F is frequently the better commercial fit for a load that is large but not outsize, and Aviall does not hold or guarantee access to any particular aircraft. We shortlist the types genuinely available for your dates and let the cargo decide.

What drives the price of a cargo charter

Charter pricing is built from the aircraft's operating cost for the whole task, not from a rate per kilogram. That means the biggest variables are often invisible in the cargo itself.

    • Positioning, where the aircraft has to fly from empty to reach your origin, and where it goes afterwards
    • Aircraft type and size, a right-sized freighter is nearly always cheaper than an oversized one
    • Sector length and any technical stops, including whether payload has to be traded for fuel
    • Airport costs, slot availability, curfews and out-of-hours handling at both ends
    • Handling complexity, outsize loading, dangerous goods segregation, special equipment or extended ramp time
    • Return load potential, which can materially reduce cost if the operator can fill the aircraft on the way back

    Australian gateways and practical considerations

Sydney handles the largest share of inbound technology volume but operates a night curfew that constrains late arrivals and can push a movement into the following morning. Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are curfew-free, which matters when equipment must clear and move to site overnight ahead of an installation window. Canberra, Adelaide and Darwin are all viable for freighter charter and are sometimes the better choice when the final destination is closer to them than to a major capital.

Choosing a gateway is a total-cost question. A cheaper international sector into one port can be entirely consumed by a long domestic leg with special lifting requirements at the other end, so we price the international and domestic segments together rather than in isolation.

Lead times and what to send first

Aircraft options can usually be returned within the hour of a well-formed enquiry. From there, a realistic departure depends more on paperwork and permits than on aircraft supply: dangerous goods documentation, export release, landing and overflight permits, and slot availability at both ends.

The fastest way to a usable answer is origin, destination, payload, dimensions or CBM, ready date, commodity and a packing list. Estimates are fine. We would rather begin sourcing on approximate figures and refine than wait for a final crate schedule while availability changes around us.

How we run a dedicated charter

    Operator-neutral sourcing

Options shortlisted across a wide operator base on real availability rather than a single held aircraft.

    Right-sizing

Aircraft matched to actual volume and weight, because an oversized freighter is simply a bigger bill.

    Part charter options

Defined capacity on a dedicated aircraft where a full charter is more than the cargo needs.

    Permit and slot management

Landing, overflight, slots and out-of-hours handling arranged and tracked by our desk.

    Gateway comparison

International and domestic legs priced together so the cheapest port is the cheapest overall.

    Heavy lift · Project cargo

Outsize mining component into a remote regional strip

An ASX-listed resources operator faced a stalled processing line waiting on a single oversized component too large for any scheduled freighter. Aviall sourced an outsize main-deck nose-loader, completed pavement and load-spread checks at the regional destination, and coordinated road movement permits at both ends.

    Outcome

Component on site inside 72 hours of first call; production line restart same week.

    Pharma · Cool chain

    Temperature-controlled biologics on a single-shipper aircraft

A global health programme required a high-value biologics consignment moved on a controlled cool-chain into the Asia-Pacific without consolidation risk. Aviall chartered a freighter dedicated to the shipment, with active containers, written ramp-time targets, and continuous data-logger oversight.

    Outcome

Zero temperature excursions; chain-of-custody documentation closed within 24 hours of landing.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

Full charter gives you the entire aircraft and complete control of loading and timing. Part charter gives you a defined portion of capacity on an aircraft that is already chartered, so you keep the benefits of a dedicated non-scheduled service while sharing the cost. Part charter is often what makes a controlled movement viable for cargo that does not fill an aircraft.
