What defence and government charter demands that commercial charter does not

Defence and government logistics is not simply commercial freight with tighter deadlines. The requirement usually arrives with constraints that shape the aircraft choice as much as the cargo does: documented chain of custody, restricted or sensitive content, controlled handling and access, fixed programme milestones, and approval chains that must be satisfied before anything moves.

Practically, that means three things for how a charter is arranged. Documentation and permits are planned first, not last, diplomatic clearances, overflight and landing permits and customs treatment routinely determine feasibility before aircraft availability does. Airfield selection accounts for access control and receiving capability, not only runway length. And a single accountable coordinator holds the whole chain, because a movement with several handoffs is a movement with several failure points.

The clean line: we arrange civil air charter for defence and government logistics tasks. Aviall does not own or operate aircraft and does not provide military-operated airlift. We source and coordinate certified civil operators against your requirement and constraints.

    • Permits and clearances planned as the critical path, not an afterthought
    • Airfield selection driven by access, security and receiving equipment as well as performance
    • Documentation discipline, manifests, dangerous goods, custody records
    • One accountable coordinator from tasking to offload confirmation

    Mission types we arrange

Requirements in this sector fall into a small number of recurring patterns, each with a different aircraft and planning profile.

    Regional reach from Australian gateways

Most defence and government tasking involving Australia runs through a predictable set of corridors: the Pacific and PNG, South East Asia, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East and North America. Each carries its own permit lead times, technical stop options and handling depth, and those differences, not distance alone, usually decide the routing.

Northern and western gateways matter disproportionately here. Darwin and Townsville shorten Pacific and South East Asian sectors, Perth serves Indian Ocean routings, and curfew-free ports such as Melbourne and Brisbane preserve overnight departure windows when a milestone will not move.

    • Pacific and PNG, short sectors, limited handling, aircraft-size constraints at some fields
    • South East Asia, dense options, permit lead times vary significantly by state
    • Indian Ocean and Middle East, technical stop planning and overflight approvals dominate
    • Trans-Pacific to North America, payload-for-fuel trades and stop selection matter most

How a tasking becomes a quote

Send the requirement in whatever form it exists. A tasking signal, a cargo schedule, a spreadsheet or a short email all work, paste or upload it (/submit-rfq?type=cargo) or email Charters@Aviall.com.au.

Where content is sensitive, send only what you are cleared to send. Weight, dimensions, hazard classification, airfields and dates are enough for us to establish feasibility and shortlist aircraft; specifics can follow through the appropriate channel.

    • Origin and destination airfields, including any access restrictions
    • Total weight and cube, plus largest single piece dimensions
    • Dangerous goods or controlled item classification, and documentation status
    • Passenger numbers and configuration requirements, if applicable
    • Required dates, milestone consequences and any window constraints
    • Approval chain and who must be copied on status reporting

How we support defence and government programmes

    Permit-first planning

Overflight, landing and clearance requirements are assessed at the start, because they usually determine feasibility before aircraft availability does.

    Cargo and passenger capability

Freighter, combi and passenger charter arranged under one coordination point, including outsize ramp-loading capacity.

    Documentation discipline

Manifests, hazard documentation and custody records handled with the rigour these programmes require and audit later.

    24/7 responsiveness

Short-notice tasking handled around the clock, with a single accountable coordinator through to offload confirmation.

Outsize mining component into a remote regional strip

An ASX-listed resources operator faced a stalled processing line waiting on a single oversized component too large for any scheduled freighter. Aviall sourced an outsize main-deck nose-loader, completed pavement and load-spread checks at the regional destination, and coordinated road movement permits at both ends.

    Outcome

Component on site inside 72 hours of first call; production line restart same week.

    AOG · Time critical

Replacement engine to a wide-body grounded overseas

A major carrier had a wide-body grounded at a foreign hub, awaiting a replacement engine sitting in a domestic MRO. Aviall positioned a freighter to the MRO, coordinated dangerous goods documentation for the engine and stand, and held a flight-following bridge with the airline's tech ops cell door-to-door.

    Outcome

Engine wheels-up inside 14 hours of release; aircraft returned to service the next operational day.

Have a defence or government movement to arrange?

Send airfields, weight, dimensions and dates, or your tasking document as it stands. We assess permit feasibility and return aircraft options with an indicative cost structure.

    Have a live requirement?

Send us origin, destination, payload and ready date. We return aircraft options. Attach an existing RFQ, packing list or photos straight from your phone, partial detail is enough to start.
