"Largest" in cargo aviation can mean different things: heaviest payload, longest cargo hold, tallest door or highest volume. The list below ranks the aircraft that actually move outsize and heavy freight around the world today, and the missions each is genuinely built for. If you need to move a specific load, the answer is rarely the biggest aircraft. It is the right aircraft.
1. Antonov AN-225 Mriya, the largest ever built
The Antonov AN-225 Mriya was in a class of its own, a six-engine super-heavy freighter built to carry the Soviet space shuttle. Its maximum payload of around 250 tonnes and a cargo deck over 43 metres long made it the only aircraft that could accept certain single pieces of industrial and aerospace cargo. Only one airframe was ever completed.
2. Antonov AN-124 Ruslan, the outsize workhorse
The Antonov AN-124 is the default choice for genuine outsize project cargo today. Payload up to roughly 120 tonnes, a hold ~36 m long and ~6.4 m wide, full-width nose and rear doors, onboard cranes and a kneeling undercarriage. If a load is too long, too tall or above ~50 tonnes, this is almost always the aircraft.
3. Boeing 747-8F, the long, heavy freighter
The Boeing 747-8F is the largest commercial freighter in widespread service. Payload up to ~137 tonnes, plus a nose door that accepts main-deck pieces the 777F cannot, the standard choice for long or heavy palletised cargo when nose-loading is required, but the load is not truly outsize.
4. Boeing 777F, the twin-engine long-hauler
The Boeing 777F is the twin-engine benchmark for long-range main-deck freight, up to ~102 tonnes over intercontinental distance, without a nose door. It dominates long-haul palletised cargo where efficiency matters and pieces fit through the side cargo door.
5. McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, the dense freight tri-jet
The MD-11F remains a workhorse for dense, palletised cargo over long range, up to ~90 tonnes and around 26 main-deck pallet positions. It sits below the 747 and 777 in raw capacity but is a genuinely capable long-range freighter.
How to pick the right aircraft
Aviall does not sell tonnage. We solve loads. Send us the piece dimensions, weights, origin and destination and we will tell you exactly which freighter fits, and quote it against the actual aircraft. For any heavy lift or outsize cargo requirement, that is the starting point.
