    Why electrical plant behaves differently from the rest of the tranche

    Where racks and cooling plant fill an aircraft by volume, electrical infrastructure does the opposite. A UPS cabinet, battery bank, switchgear section or dry-type transformer concentrates a lot of mass into a small footprint, and the constraint becomes permissible floor loading per unit area rather than total payload or cubic capacity.

    That is why electrical items are usually the piece that dictates the load plan. A single transformer positioned badly can render adjacent positions unusable, and a battery bank without adequate load spreading may be refused at loading even though the aircraft has plenty of payload remaining. Both are avoidable with per-piece weights and footprint dimensions supplied up front.

    The second difference is regulatory. A significant share of modern data centre power equipment contains lithium cells, which brings part or all of the consignment under IATA dangerous goods provisions and materially narrows which operators can carry it.

    Lithium batteries, UPS modules and operator acceptance

    Lithium content is the single most common cause of delay on electrical infrastructure charters. Classification depends on cell chemistry, watt-hour rating per cell and per package, net quantity, and whether cells are installed in equipment, packed with equipment or shipped standalone. Each of those routes has different packing instructions, state-of-charge expectations and documentation.

    Operator acceptance is genuinely not universal. Some operators decline particular lithium classes outright; others accept them subject to packaging, state of charge and segregation from other cargo. Discovering a restriction after an aircraft has been provisionally held is expensive and avoidable, which is why we ask for UN numbers, watt-hour ratings, packing groups and net quantity per package at enquiry stage rather than at booking.

    Traditional VRLA and flooded lead-acid batteries carry their own classification issues, particularly around electrolyte and non-spillable declarations. They are not automatically simpler than lithium; they are differently regulated.

    Where a consignment mixes dangerous goods with general technology cargo, segregation requirements can reduce the usable capacity of the aircraft. That is a factor better reflected in the original quote than found on the ramp.

    Floor loading, shoring and load spreading

    Aircraft decks have limits on load per unit area as well as total payload, and those limits differ by aircraft type and by position on the deck. A dense unit resting on a small base can exceed the permissible loading even when the aircraft is far from full, so the answer is engineering rather than negotiation: shoring, spreader boards, a dedicated pallet arrangement or a purpose-built shipping frame that distributes the mass across a larger area.

    This has to be designed before the aircraft is committed, because the solution affects the piece's overall dimensions, the pallet positions consumed and sometimes the choice of aircraft. Supplying the footprint dimensions of each heavy item alongside its weight lets us model this early, and where the item requires purpose-built shoring, we build that into the plan and the quote.

    Loading method matters too. Very heavy single pieces may need ramp loading rather than a main deck cargo door and loader, which points towards specific outsize types rather than commercial freighters.

    Live facilities and critical power replacements

    A meaningful share of electrical charter demand is not project cargo at all. It is a live facility running without redundancy after a UPS module, switchgear section or transformer failure. In that situation the commercial calculation changes entirely: the movement is measured against risk and downtime exposure, not against freight cost per kilogram.

    For those movements the limiting factor is rarely aircraft availability. It is usually dangerous goods documentation, export release and permits, which is why the fastest possible route is to send the packing list and DG detail with the first message. Aircraft options generally come back within the hour, and where a suitable aircraft is positioned regionally a departure inside 12 to 24 hours is realistic.
