    Heavy is not the same as outsize, and the difference is money

    The single most expensive misunderstanding in heavy air freight is treating weight and dimensions as one problem. They are separate, and only one of them forces you into the most expensive aircraft.

    Heavy cargo that breaks down into pallet-sized pieces moves on standard freighters at standard freighter economics, even at very high total tonnage. Outsize cargo, a single piece that cannot pass through a main-deck door, forces ramp-loading capacity, and that is a different price bracket entirely. Many enquiries that arrive convinced they need an AN-124 are actually a 777F or 747F movement, and that distinction can halve the cost.

    So the first thing we establish is not tonnage. It is the dimensions and weight of the largest single piece, and whether floor loading limits are satisfied at its footprint. Those two answers determine which aircraft are genuinely available to you.

    Floor loading: the limit that binds before payload

    Aircraft floors have limits expressed as weight per unit area, not just total weight. A compact machine of 12 tonnes sitting on a small footprint can exceed a deck limit that a 30-tonne, well-distributed load does not come close to. This is why dense industrial equipment is so often the harder loading problem despite weighing less than the aircraft's headline payload.

    The fix is engineering, not aircraft size: load spreading beams, shoring, a purpose-built skid or cradle, or a different loading position. Send centre of gravity and lifting or tie-down points along with dimensions and we will confirm what is required before pricing, rather than discovering it on the ramp when your load window is already open.

    • Whether the item can be drained or partly stripped to reduce weight or height
    • Drawings or photographs, which frequently answer in one look what descriptions cannot

    These are approximate maximum structural payloads. Usable payload on your specific charter is always lower once fuel for the sector, departure airport performance and any technical stop are applied, a long-haul departure at maximum payload is frequently not possible non-stop.

    Australian gateway constraints for heavy aircraft

    A heavy freighter needs more than runway length. It needs pavement classification adequate for the loaded weight, apron space to manoeuvre and be worked, and ground equipment able to handle the load coming off. Several Australian airports that can technically accept the aircraft cannot practically handle the cargo, and that distinction is worth confirming before a routing is committed.

    Then there is the leg that most heavy lift plans underestimate: airport to site. Moving a heavy, oversize piece by road requires a route survey, oversize permits, escorts and sometimes overhead line or bridge assessment. On remote resources and infrastructure projects, that leg can take longer and cost more than the flight, so we select the gateway around the road move rather than the reverse.

    • Sydney, largest volume, but a night curfew constrains late arrivals
    • Perth, the practical gateway for Western Australian resources destinations

    What drives the price of a heavy lift charter

    Heavy lift is priced from the aircraft's operating cost for the whole task, not per kilogram. The biggest variables are frequently invisible in the cargo itself, which is why two apparently identical shipments can quote very differently on different dates.

    • Positioning, where the nearest suitable aircraft is, and where it must go next
    • Aircraft size, an oversized aircraft is a permanent cost premium; right-sizing is the main lever
    • Sector length, technical stops and any payload-for-fuel trade
    • Loading complexity, spreading equipment, cranes, extended ramp time, supervision
    • Airport costs, slots, curfews and out-of-hours handling at both ends
    • Return load potential, which can reduce cost materially when the operator can fill the aircraft back

    Commercial freighters commonly carry up to roughly 100 to 135 tonnes depending on type and sector, and outsize AN-124 class aircraft carry approximately 120 tonnes with ramp loading. Usable payload is always lower than the structural maximum once sector fuel and airport performance are applied, so the practical answer depends on your route.
